Diespeker is thrilled to see stunning terrazzo design TE081 feature at new concession brand Bocco, from The Restaurant Group.
Over the past four years, Aberdeen Airport has invested £20 million into a major refurbishment and transformation of its passenger facilities, resulting in a fifty percent increase in the size of the terminal.
Designed by turnerbates Design & Architecture, Bocco is the latest addition to the airport, replacing The Globe Pub. On the menu are sourdough pizza, fresh pasta, spritz and other favourite Italian classics.
The modern Italian design and signature shapes and arches of Venetian architecture inspire the restaurant concept. The designers paired warm terracotta tones with fresh splashes of colour from the feature 6 sqm terrazzo bar top to create a relaxed environment within the bustling airport.
turnerbates lead designer and Associate Monica Herdlevaer explained: “We wanted to use traditional Italian materials for the bar counter as one of the main features in the scheme. The large scale coloured pieces in this terrazzo gives a contemporary look whilst still being quintessentially Italian. The terrazzo was also an inspiration for the branding.”
Diespeker supplied a variety of samples to turnerbates before the final choice of terrazzo was made, chosen to fit in with the colour palette for the design scheme of deep blues, greens and terracotta.
Bold, architectural signage, along with geometric patterns on dividing screens and the bar front reference the shutters and windows seen throughout northern Italy’s winding streets, giving an outdoor feel.
Bespoke abstract artworks evoking the architecture of Carlo Scarpa and art of Giorgio de Chirico have been designed for the new restaurant. Overhead vines and textural objects create a tactile experience and invite visitors to escape to Italy even before they leave the airport.
Interior designer Cecilia Severin said: “We have designed the restaurant with a distinct wine bar atmosphere – softer seating, and natural lighting give the space a relaxed outdoor feel. This is important in airport environments that can sometimes feel quite enclosed.”
Nick Ayerst, Managing Director of TRG Concessions, added: “We are very excited to open this thrilling new concept in Aberdeen Airport. We already have a significant presence in Aberdeen Airport and this new concept will offer passengers passing through something completely different and unique.”
A dynamic and multi-disciplinary studio, turnerbates work on a diverse range of schemes from concept to completion, both large and small, for large private and public clients and small up and coming organisations.
TE081 was added to Diespeker’s range in 2019 and has proved a popular choice for projects requiring a statement design terrazzo. Suitable for both commercial and residential projects, TE081 is part of our Standard range. It’s a resin-based terrazzo available in 12, 20 and 30mm thickness.
