When a Tunbridge Wells couple were unable to agree on the surface material for their new kitchen worktops, it took a Diespeker terrazzo to achieve a harmonious outcome.
The beautiful sunshine yellow kitchen was designed by John Place of Place Design. The property is a 1980s house and John wanted to reflect on the era with the use of plywood, Formica and period-style inset handles.
During the design process, various options were explored, including fluted glass fronts and using pinks for the colour scheme. Agreement was reached on the stunning yellow ‘Sol’ which is in Formica’s commercial range.
The kitchen units are a hybrid design with the doors, sides and end panels made in plywood and the carcasses in oak veneer. The oak provides a pleasing grain detail alongside the Formica with the strong lines from the plywood working nicely with the overall aesthetics.
When it came to the surface material, various materials were explored. Terrazzo was mentioned early on but the clients were unsure, feeling more drawn to natural stone. They visited different suppliers and looked at a variety of slabs, but after taking the samples home they were unable to find a stone they agreed on.
John flagged up terrazzo again, and Diespeker’s name came up. He says, “When we started looking at terrazzo, Diespeker really stood out. There were plenty of options and colour schemes, and the website was really informative.” Diespeker’s Business Development Manager Diego Bonamin made sure the clients felt at ease with the choice of product.
During the sample process, one design really stood out – TE081 from the Standard Plus range. “Although it’s busy it works really well with the scheme, picking out the colour of oak and ply. This was the first sample that everyone agreed on, we all said it was fantastic.”
John says that using TE081 vertically for the splashback too makes the pattern even more cohesive in the overall kitchen design.
Features in the kitchen include a practical larder unit housing a full size fridge and separate full size freezer, handily zoning all food storage into one area. This also has a terrazzo worktop. A ‘magic corner’ style system with Planero shelving optimises the corner storage space.
This bespoke sunshine yellow kitchen provides a bright, welcoming and warm space in the home, ideal for home cooking and entertaining.
